John Sayles to write HBO's Scar Tissue

Multihyphenate John Sayles has been tapped to write HBO's series project based on the childhood of Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis.
Drama, tentatively titled "Scar Tissue" (the name of Kiedis' autobiography), centers on the rocker's early years living in West Hollywood with his father. At that time, Kiedis' dad, known as Spider, sold drugs and mingled with rock stars on the Sunset Strip, all while aspiring to get into showbiz (Daily Variety, Nov. 12).More than one option(Co) Daily Variety

Catapult 360 partners Marc Abrams and Michael Benson, who partnered with Kiedis to create the series, said Sayles hit it off with the rock star. Sayles has been meeting with both Kiedis and Kiedis' father as he starts to write the script.

"John writes from a real human place, and has already tapped into the relationship between young Anthony and his dad," Abrams said.

The series will be set in 1970s West Hollywood and Los Angeles and include the rockers encountered by Kiedis and his father (who, according to legend, was a drug dealer for the Who and Led Zeppelin, among others).

Sayles is known for writing and helming such pics as "Honeydripper," "Silver City," "Sunshine State" and "Lone Star."

Blood Sugar Sex Magik #18 - Guitar World's 50 Greatest Guitar albums

18) Blood Sugar Sex Magik, 1991 (The Red Hot Chili Peppers)

It came out of a haunted mansion in the Hollywood Hills—the album that established the Red Hot Chili Peppers as major-league contenders in the game of rock. By this point, the Peppers had survived the Eighties L.A. punk scene, a head-spinning succession of personnel changes and the death of founding guitarist Hillel Slovak. But now they had John Frusciante in the fold, not to mention producer Rick Rubin, who worked with the band for the first time on Blood Sugar Sex Magik. There would be no Rage Against the Machine, nor any rap metal, without Blood Sugar’s amalgam of funk, metal and hip-hop vocalizing.

WHAT THEY SAID

Flea: “That was the beginning of a new era for us. Breaking into the mainstream was a real change in our lives. Also it was a time when John brought a whole new concept into the band as a guitar player and songwriter. It suddenly gave us so much more to draw from—a bigger launch pad for us all to get launched into outer space from.”

Frusciante: “Following the great creative peak of recording Blood Sugar, the positive feelings I had had began to dissipate.”

Anthony and Everly Kiedis Take a Beach Stroll

Anthony Kiedis was caught red-headed by the paparazzi — but not doing anything bad! Photogs snapped the Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman strapping 16-month-old son Everly Bear into his Baby Bjorn while out for a beach walk in Malibu on Valentine’s Day.

The pair were joined by a lady friend of Anthony’s (not pictured), who carried Everly’s sweatshirt.

Mom is model Heather Christie, from whom Anthony split last year.

Chili Peppers may extend hiatus (According to Smith)

The Red Hot Chili Peppers could extend their current hiatus by another year, or perhaps even longer, according to a new interview with drummer Chad Smith at musicradar.com. Smith had told the same website last fall that the band was taking a year-long break after completing the touring cycle for its 2006 album, Stadium Arcadium. But the drummer has now become more vague about the group's future plans, saying, "I think when we're all ready to play again, when we feel like it's time to be the Chili Peppers again, we'll do it." Smith added cryptically, "You can't force anybody to play who doesn't want to. I'm not naming names. I'm just saying we all have to feel that the time is right to get it together."

Smith also admitted that he might have been off with his initial forecast for the band's return, explaining, "A year off might have been optimistic. Maybe it'll be two years, maybe more, who knows? . . . The thing is, we'll only get back together for the right reason: to play music with one another."

Despite the uncertainty about the Chili Peppers' future, Smith said that the last year has been "a very positive time in our lives, actually." Smith himself is gearing up for the spring release of the debut album from Chickenfoot, the new "supergroup" he's in with ex-Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony, as well as guitarist Joe Satriani.

"...this year's Grammy theme sound like a bad knock-off of a Red Hot Chili Peppers tune?"

This is a quote from The Edmonton Journal by Sandra Sperounes:

"8:42 p.m. Is it just me, or does this year's Grammy theme sound like a bad knock-off of a Red Hot Chili Peppers tune? Will the California rockers consider launching their own lawsuit?"

I didn't get a chance to hear it. Did any of you? Let me know if it did sound like it.

'Bob And The Monster' Film featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers

Here is a plot summary for an up-coming film on Bob Forrest:

Some of music's most respected artists from Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Scott Weiland to Steve Earle, John Doe, and The Counting Crows have declared Bob Forrest as one of the most talented songwriters of our time. His band, Thelonious Monster, started in the mid 80's as indie-rock heroes, played thousands of shows - some brilliant some train wrecks, made a few records and ultimately watched their friends and peers catapult to fame and fortune while they fell behind in a chaotic mess of addiction. Bob tried to continue creating with the passion and love of music alone, but expectations, envy, resentments and drugs got the best of him by the early 90's, Bob disappeared into alcoholism, drug addiction, television and dirty dishes. Then one day, miraculously, he woke up and cleaned up after more than thirty stints in rehabs. Attempts to get different jobs as a concert promoter, delivery man and truck driver fell flat and friends repeatedly reminded him that he was a songwriter, not a messenger. After meeting a young musician and fan named Josh Klinghoffer, who had a genuine love of music, Bob slowly began writing again. Soon afterward, the now clean and sober Bob with his new band, Bicycle Thief, released their debut, You Come And Go Like A Pop Song, in 1999. Pop Song conjured images of Lou Reed and Paul Westerberg and received rave reviews. The band played shows with Neil Young, RHCP, Stone Temple Pilots and Iggy Pop, but this time, got lost in the shadows of the "flavor of the month" music industry. Bob took his recovery seriously and soon found another calling as an addiction specialist and began working with the Musician's Assistance Program, which helps musicians recover from drug and alcohol addiction. He was the recipient of MAP's highest honor for his work in that field and continues to serve as a counselor and addiction specialist in a Southern California treatment center, and is the featured counselor on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew Pinksy. Through interviews with Bob, friends and fellow musicians, rare live and archive footage, "Unsung: Bob and the Monster" tells the story of Bob Forrest, a creative soul who rose from the ashes of his self-destruction to live a life that never seemed possible.

We are still unsure of the release date, but we'll keep you up to date. Meanwhile check out the IMDB page here.

Flea to feature on Joaquin Phoenix hip hop album?

Actor Joaquin Phoenix has denied that his nascent venture into the world of hip-hop is a hoax. Phoenix conducted a press conference in Beverly Hills, which gave him a chance to clear up the rumors that his musical career is nothing more than an elaborate ruse. “I realize that [my hip-hop career] might seem ridiculous to other people,” he said. “But I can’t concern myself with that.”

Affleck filmed Phoenix at the press conference, and reporters were barred from bringing their own cameras to the session. Presumably the footage will end up in Affleck’s vaunted documentary on his famous friend’s hip-hop career, which is set to feature some involvement from P. Diddy. “Diddy said to me, ‘You’ve gotta get out there,’” Phoenix said. “I have 10 songs now, and three of them I think are really good, and the others I think are pretty crap. But I’ll work on them.”

Dermot Mulroney and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers may also feature on Phoenix’s project, and apparently Method Man has offered his services. “I sound like such a fucking dick,” said Phoenix, with unnerving accuracy. “But what I wanna do is make the fucking Wall. I want to do the hip-hop Floyd…I have one track right now that’s five minutes that I’m trying to make seven.”

So Phoenix is either set to make the 21st century equivalent of “Ice Ice Baby” or is etching out a ham-fisted satire of the music industry. Either way, the results seem destined to be underwhelming. “Everyone might hate it, and I might be the only one who likes it,” he said. “But that’s OK, because I’m having an amazing time making the record.”

The Best John Frusciante Quotes

"And for me the only way to live life is to grab the bull by the horns and call up recording studios and set dates to go in recording studios. To try and accomplish something."

"And this whole period of time of gradually working at being a better guitar player and songwriter have gradually led me to the point where I feel I'm doing a clearer representation of the thing that I've been feeling inside me since I was four years old."

"As far as my solo record, I don't want a gold record or anything, I'm happy to be small and to have the people appreciate the music who really like me for being me."

"But I have been avoiding talking about what I'm doing now because it's frustrating for people to hear about things that aren't available yet."

"Everything's very perfectly balanced; for all the horrible things in the world there's lots of good things."

"For me it's important to be in balance. To not let fear get in the way of things, to not worry so much about protecting yourself all the time."

"For me my friendship with Omar Rodriguez from Mars Volta that friendship really means a lot to me because he's another creative person who works as hard as I do."

"I don't want to be on the radio. I don't want to be on Mtv."

"I feel like I'd like to continue putting out records and start putting them out more rapidly than I have until now and for me if I can keep selling the records to the fans that already like me that's fine."

"I find that the best way to do things is to constantly move forward and to never doubt anything and keep moving forward, if you make a mistake say you made a mistake."

"I just feel like the songs that come out are the songs that come."

"I think the feelings in my music were suggested to me before I even had the ability to play music."

"I try to put the same spirit into that that I put into any other music endeavor I'm involved in."

"I would say a lot of the emotion in what I do is a sort of a thankfulness for those energies being around, because there's been points in my life when they weren't around, and it's a real sort of miserable existence."

"I'm not interested in forcing my music on people, and that's what the whole music industry nowadays is based on is forcing stations to play it, forcing people to listen to it."

"In music you have people exposing this very vulnerable part of themselves, and you also have the lifestyle is so fast that oftentimes people search for whatever the easiest way to feel relaxed in the midst of all of it, or the easiest way to have energy."

"In the Chili Peppers I'm a part of that world in a pretty big world and that's just the way it is."

"My music, my whole approach to the synthesizer has completely changed now."

"Something like trying to protect yourself all the time, things like trying to outwit fate. Those things can be the worst thing you can do for yourself."

"The main thing experience has taught me is that one has to sort of hone their relationship to time, you know."

"Yeah, I really like being alive. But I definitely don't have any intentions as an artist."

"You just never know when somebody's gonna die. It could happen at any moment so you've got to really treat everybody that way. Just really let everybody know how you feel about them."
